Challenges

Mater Health has a diverse and multi-generational workforce including approximately 85% part-time workers, specialist medical employees, as well as business services staff, catering, cleaning, waste management and many others. Rostering of this varied workforce presented difficulties for Mater Health’s management team. Some of the challenges the organisation was facing included:

  • Nurse unit managers were spending 16 hours per roster, per month, detracting from time directly spent nursing
  • Inefficiencies and inconsistencies in how rosters, with no accurate view of overtime and fatigue, and potential for human error
  • Administration of rosters, pay cycles, and pay platforms was happening in silos causing them to lose money in inefficiencies
  • Inequity among nursing staff and unbalanced skill mix

Mater Health needed a solution that could help manage the changing needs of the already diverse workforce, roster its employees effectively and productively, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.

Solutions

UKG helped Mater Health better manage its diverse workforce with real-time data and tools to improve rostering, timekeeping, and compliance. Their UKG solution enabled them to:

  • Schedule thousands of employees across multiple business functions and locations
  • Align the right employees with the right skills, at the right time, in the right location
  • Collect accurate timekeeping information and automatically send this data to payroll
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations

“I absolutely would recommend UKG to all healthcare providers. The reasons are threefold: equity for staff – the ability for all members of our healthcare team to have a say in a roster that is fair to them; achieving the right skill mix – getting the right distribution of senior and junior staff throughout every shift for patient safety and for the support of our junior staff; and, financial gains – efficiencies in ensuring the right staffing is occurring so we’re not paying penalties or over-staffing on weekends and night shifts where we don’t need to.” – Janet See, Nursing Director, Mater Health

“UKG was chosen for the quality of its solutions, its understanding of the workforces needs of the healthcare industry, as well as the continual support that it provides as a business partner, rather than just a solutions supplier.”

“The fact that we have a roster that doesn’t take up clinical time, that’s efficient, that’s sustainable, that’s transparent and that we all get to see and all get to be a part of is a real success.” – Alison Broadbent, Director of Nursing for Medicine and Chronic Health, Mater Health
